DIY: Upcycling Old Decor

Have you ever thought to yourself; I can totally do something with this old chest of drawers and got lost in the world of DIY?! Well I can definitely tell you that we have!!ย DIYing is not for the faint of heart, and I’m still not quite sure how R1 gets things done with that bit of OCD in her ๐Ÿ˜ฑ #curious. But hey, she must have figured it out by now, because she’s one of THE MOST creative people that I know (no bias here ๐Ÿ˜‚). For me, R2, the spark to DIY comes every blue moon, when I have tons of time on my hands or even when I should be focusing on studying. What can I say? I’m a bit of a procrastinator and baking or colouring a piece of art is my calming place.

Bring Me Back To Life

I have had these ceramic tiles hanging in my bathroom for about 5-6 years now and have never really liked the look of them, but LOVED the quotes! So, after spending far too much time deliberating and giving it side eye while I brush my teeth, I have decided to give it new life by upcycling it.

What Was Used:

  • Paintbrush (various sizes, in order to get into the small areas)
  • Standard white & gold paint
  • Ceramic Tile
  • IMG_0770Gold Spray Paint

Ensure the item is cleaned before you begin to paint as you wouldn’t want to paint dirt on to your upcycle. I found painting wasn’t too hard, I just needed to be sure it was “smooth” as there are a lot of textures and it wasn’t perfectly flat.

This is the result after the first layer of paint, I spent a good bit of time debating whether I should do another layer, but I opted against as I liked the showing of the various textures through the paint.

In order to “lift” the typo out and make it more visible after I applied the spray paint, I decided to apply black paint. I will admit to not being impressed with my black paint application, but I had to let it go as I was going to be spray painting over it anyways.

Final Results:

Below is the final result in gold, if you look closely, you can notice the photo on the right- the “definition” of the letters is darker because of the black colour used as a base. The photo was taken later in the day so the lighting doesn’t do it justice, but trust me when I say it’s lovely.

Its funny how we can take something “old”, or something that’s never fully given us the – “WOW I love that!” sensation, and turn it into a work of art, with just a little bit of inspiration, and a dab of DIY! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Gotta love those bursts of inspiration and that personal touch, that only we can do to the items we have bought.
